How much methane is released from landfills?

In 2007 landfills accounted for almost 133 teragrams (Tg) CO2 Eq., or 34 percent, of methane emissions in the United States. The concentration of methane in the atmosphere has increased by almost 150 percent since the Revolutionary War. The IPCC says that methane is a much more dangerous greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide because methane is 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere. The voluntary Landfill Methane Outreach Program, run by the EPA, converts methane, the primary component in natural gas, into energy.
