A single elephant is believed to produce a half ton of methane per year.  The Asian elephant breeding program at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo located in Syracuse, New York is pursuing methods to utilize excrement from animals as an energy supplement to reduce heat and electricity costs.  Their six elephants in residence produce more than half a ton of excrement per day.
