On average, CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs), have about 4 milligrams of mercury. This mercury allows the bulbs to function efficiently and is not released when CFLs are disposed of. Thanks to recent technological advances, the average mercury content of new CFLs has dropped by about 20%.
