Research on protein is still emerging, but The Harvard Institute of Health recommends 0.8g of protein for every kilogram of body weight. For a 160 pound person, that’s 64g of protein a day. However, it’s best to consult a doctor or nutritionist since there are a lot of factors that influence recommended protein intake.
Good sources of protein include fish, nuts, beans, poultry, soy, and whole grains. The Institute provides these tips for choosing protein:
1. Eat a variety of foods to ensure you get the protein you need
2. Go low on saturated fat
3. Limit red meat– and avoid processed meat
4. Eat soy in moderation– 2 to 4 servings a week
5. Balance carbs and protein
