Cow farms in the United States produce about “16,338 gallons of manure per acre per year”. Chicken farms on the Delmarve Penninsula alone produce about 1.5 billion pounds of manure a year (more than the annual human waste of New York), and it’s creating dead zones in the Chesapeake Bay, one of the nation’s most important estuaries. The total amount of manure produced annually in the US is estimated to be over one billion tons, and most of this is either stored outdoors or is allowed to collect in lagoons. Not only can the smell, imaginably, knock a person on their feet, but the waste can pollute and emit greenhouse gases.
