    Tourism is the largest industry of the Maldives. Tourism makes up a whopping 31% of the country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2002. Tourism brings in $198 million per year, with the country containing more than 466,000 tourists in 2000. The average occupancy rate is 69%.

    By contrast, the fishing sector of the Maldives only contains 7% if the country’s GDP.
