The new biodegradable Sunchips bags decompose in about 14 weeks in a hot and active compost bin. However, I can not find any information regarding how long it takes the old Sunchips bag to decompose.
There have been several reports that the Sunchips bag doesn’t actually compost at all. One site put the new bag in their compost bin and nearly a year later they pulled it out and it was unchanged. Similar reports were made about the previous design, and now the company has admitted that the bag will not break down in bins that are kept at standard temperatures. According to Food Production Daily, compost bins must reach 55 degrees Celsius (131 degrees Fahrenheit) in order to break down the bags in 14 weeks.
