How much of the light spectrum do solar panels use?

    It is said that current solar cells, performing at maximum efficiency, can only utilize about 25% of the light to convert to energy, the bulk of the wasted light is spent as heat.  There is newer discoveries that can design a cell to absorbs upwards of 70% of light to convert to energy.
