According to the Energy Information Administration’s Greenhouse Gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy Use in Transportation (GREET) well-to-wheels model, greenhouse gas emissions from diesel vehicles using diesel fuel are 15 percent lower than those from comparable gasoline vehicles using E10 (90% gasoline, 10% ethanol). But diesel vehicles using diesel fuel emit between 4 and 137 percent MORE direct GHGs than flexible-fuel (i.e. biodiesel) vehicles using E85, depending on whether the ethanol is produced from corn or cellulosic material.
