Biofuel is roughly 20% less efficient than regular gasoline. They are also worse than regular gasoline in terms of greenhouse gases emitted.
It depends on what you mean by efficient. If you mean in terms of MPG, biofuels and diesels are usually better than gasoline. However, burning biofuels and diesels creates more “toxic soot and smog-forming emissions” than gasoline. There is still much work to be done in order to make biofuels more widely appealing.
Not all biofuels are less efficient than gasoline. There are only a few that are better, but these are still better for the environment.
