Low flow toilets are required to use a maximum of 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Normal toilets, on the other hand, generally use 3.5 gallons of water.
Low flow toilets use about 1.6 gallons of water compared to up to 7 gallons used by conventional toilets (5.4 gallons less water used). Although there were initial concerns with plumbing, i.e. clogging of toilets, new low flow toilets are very effective, using more gravity and sometimes pumps to ensure proper flow.
