The dead zone is estimated to be within 100 kilometers of the spill site, but is proposed to go as deep as 3,200-4,300 feet below the surface. Composed of oil and methane gas, scientists expect that it will take a while until microbes and ocean current will bring the oxygen levels in the water to it’s minimum levels.
