How much landfill space would be saved if everyone composted?

    According to, the United States alone produces more than 236 million tons of trash that ends up in landfills. Of that, about 25 percent is compostable materials (food scraps and organic material from yards and gardens). If every American composted all the waste that they could, it would prevent about 59 million tons of compostable materials from being sent to landfills.
