How much of landfill can we reduce if Retailers and Manufacturers went to reusable packaging?

Packaging accounts for 65% of average household waste and 33-40% of waste in all waste streams, however, almost half is recycled. On average, about 30 million tons of packaging is recycled annually, and 33-40 tons of packaging end up in landfills unnecessarily. In addition, the amount of packaging materials (and waste in general) discarded has been increasing annually. The problem is especially bad in the United States, who contribute about 40% of the world’s waste, but only make up about 5% of the global population. The United States does not have regulations on reducing packaging like some other countries do.
