It’s nearly impossible to say exactly how much land prisons take up, but it is a rather larger amount. Recently prisons have been moving from cities to rural areas, where there is more land and they actually economically benefit the rural community. The city of Altamont, NY reserved 100 acres of land in hopes that the government would put a state prison there. PA offered to give the Federal Bureau of Prisons 200 acres of land to build a prison. Iona, MI has 6 state prisons, each taking up about 2 square miles. So although I can’t get a specific number, there is rather a lot of land dedicated to prisons, depending on the state of course.
