In 2010, the United States produced about 250 million tons of waste. Of that, about 85 million tons were recycled. That amounts to about 34% of waste being recycled. In general, the US has been consistently increasing the amount of waste recycled, especially since the mid-80s, while the amount of waste we produce per capita has stayed fairly consistent.
In 2008, the U.S. recycled and/or composted 24% of its 385.9 million tons of waste, and 7% was combusted to create energy.
