Today India has 15% of its land covered by rainforest. Yet 100 years ago, half of India was rainforest. Most of the deforestation that occurs is for growing food, often by big corporations (McDonald’s) who do not originally live in the country. Rainforest clearing is common so that livestock may graze there. The only problem is that soils in rainforests are so poor, that the top soil is ruined in a short time, and so a farmer must “slash and burn” another area of rainforest to farm again.
