That depends on how far you want the car to go on battery power alone. Lead-acid batteries that allow a car to about 30 miles on a charge can cost as little as $2,000. Lithium-ion batteries that allow a car to go 70 miles or more may cost $8,000 or more. Given that lithium-ion batteries are a new technology, and most technologies decrease in price over time, this figure may drop dramatically within a few years.
