Bottled water sales dropped for the first time in five years during 2009. The recession is a major cause of this, as bottled water is more of a luxury item than a necessity. While some consumers are still buying bottled water, they are often refilling and reusing them before discarding the bottles. Moreover, eco-friendly reusable plastic and aluminum bottles are seeing increased popularity, causing further drops in bottled water sales. Nestly reported a 2.7 percent drop in sales during 2009.
