How much has the whale population decreased because of hunting?

It really depends on the species one is inquiring about. The right whales were hit the hardest. Named the Right Whale because it was the “right” one to catch. Lots of blubber, slow moving, gentle creatures. Only 400-450 North Atlantic Right Whales live in the North Atlantic these days. Around 250-400 North Pacific Right Whales have been estimated. In 1937 39,000 Right Whales were recorded harvested by the whaling industry.

The Blue Whale was similar with 30,000 harvested annually. Reducing their population to a couple hundred.
