Realistically: Not very much (yet). Unfortunately, as of 2007, Solar energy accounted for only a meager 1 percent of the energy that is being produced and consumed in the United States, but that number is growing every day. Petroleum accounts for a drastic 39% of what we use as a nation. But luckily it is on its smelly way out—read this article about what we need to do to halt global warming in its CO2 Gas tracks! It’s not solar energy alone that is going to completely reduce our dependence on oil, but a multifaceted approach and a serious investment in new infrastructure!
