It seems like the average miles per gallon for cars on america’s road has stayed relatively flat.  The average miles per gallon for cars back in 1980 was 23.1 mpg while the average miles per gallon for cars in 2009 is 25 mpg.  This is probably because the mpg advantage that hybrids offer are cut into by popular cars like big SUVs that offer less than ideal mpg average.  There is however a big push for average mpg to rise to about 35 mpg by the year 2020.
