I found a few charts that might be helpful in answering this question. While the U.S. manufacturing output has increased since 1950, the percentage of American workers employed in manufacturing has declined, as has the U.S. share in world manufacturing since 1950. In 1950, the U.S. did close to 40% of the world’s manufacturing, but now it is more like 20%. In 1948, 27.5% of those employed were in manufacturing, but in 2008, this figure was 6.9%.
