In 1980 there were about 1.8 million cars in China. The Beijing government reported that at the end of 2008 there were 64.67 million cars available for civilian use, of which privately-owned vehicles numbered 41.73 million. That was an increase of 18.1% over the previous year alone. Obviously China’s transportation sector has increased tremendously since the 1980s, largely as a result of a series of concerted decisions by Chinese leaders to encourage economic development in the private as well as publicly-owned (state-run) sector.
