How much green space will Palestine’s first planned city have?

Palestine’s first planned city is also dubbed as Palestine’s first planed “green city.”  The plan to build such a city was announced in 2008.  The Rawabi project, which means hills in Arabic, is an ambitious project indeed. Given the very fragile nature of the Palestinian environment (shortage of water, challenging topography, and urban sprawl) the focus is on proven green, livable design.  Over 40% of the city has been dedicated to open, green spaces including communal courtyards, pocket gardens, bike paths, and a large scale public park filled with indigenous plants and walking trails.  It is the hope that Rawabi will become a model for new urban planning standards across all of Palestine.
