This really depends on how the landscaping is carried out, what is planted, and what is done habitually to keep it looking good. For instance, if you were to plant flowers and grass that had to be watered daily in a dessert area like Southren California, you would be wasting a lot, in water, in destruction of natural habitat, in buying fertilizer, etc. However, if you were to plant cacti instead, there would less of a need for all of the above mentioned wastes. There are also differences depending on if you compost, or if you have a good watering schedule, etc.
