A Boeing 747 uses about 1 gallon of fuel per second and takes about 5 seconds to travel a mile. The amount of fuel a plane uses depends on how much it travels during any given day. A plane that flies about 10 hours a day will use approximately 36,000 gallons of fuel. Flying still uses less fuel per person than travelling by car requires.
