A study conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists found that it takes 220 tons of hydracarbons, fossil fuels are made of hydracarbons, to mine a 500 megawatt coal plant. The left over fuel is released into the air and causes smog.
The reference indicates that a 500 Mw plant emits 220 tons of hydrocarbons per year. That is not much at all, actually; the equivalent of about 31 barrels of oil per year, or one-seventh of a second of US driving.
And it does not address the question of how much fuel is consumed to mine coal.
Thanks for responding. That was the information I found so I provided it in hopes that it would be helpful. Are you able to provide the correct answer?
