Obviously this depends on the size of the ship, how far it is traveling and the amount of weight it is carrying. To get an idea of cargo ship fuel consumption:

One cargo ship uses about the equivalent of 50 million cars of fuel per year.

Among the worlds nearly 90,000 shipping vessels, about 370  million tons of low quality fuel are burned per year.

This is equivalent to about 20 million tons of Sulphur Oxides emitted per year.

There is some potential for nuclear powered shipping vessels, although the technology needs to be perfected for safety before this is a viable option.
