How much in fuel could a ship save if it had a “slimy” hull?

Often technological innovation is inspired by biology. Teledyne Scientific is working on a ship hull which would mimic that of the whales. It would be made of a metal mesh in which a bio-gel would excrete from. This gel would be safe for the waters and shed any barnacles that has attached to the hull. This would effectively reduce drag reducing the ships fuel consumption by up to 20%.
