How much fresh water is used each year by industry rather than as drinking water?

Industry is a major user of freshwater, accounting for 22% of the total water used on worldwide basis.  Most of this use occurs in industrialized countries; in richer nations like the United States industry accounts for a full 59% of water use, while the figure drops to 8% in poorer countries.  Industry’s important role in water consumption highlights the fact that, while personal lifestyle changes to save water are certainly important, really addressing water shortages will require that we change some of the process which currently power our society.  Implementing changes to help industry use water more efficiently is one of the most important things we can do to conserve water on a global scale.
