How much food has been destroyed because of the gulf oil spill?

    There will never be an exact number of the loss because of the nature of the ocean’s food chain.  On top of the millions of fish and other animals one can physically see dead, there are billions of microscopic organisms that have suffered as well.  The larger fish, oysters, and shrimp rely on the energy of these tiny critters to travel upwards through the food chain.  If populations were critically harmed, it may take years for them to recover, and thus the populations of the larger animals will also decrease.
