On average, each person in the US generates more than half a pound of food waste every day. That amounts to 29 million tons of food getting wasted each year across the country. Wasted food of course results in all the oil, pesticides, and fertilizers used to produce the food being wasted as well, and so takes a big toll on the environment. Even worse, food that gets thrown into the landfill breaks down to produce methane – a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. Cutting back on the amount of food we waste in this country would be a big help to the global environment.
