I’m not sure that this is an answerable question as is. Do you mean how much produce is grown? Or how many pounds of food per person is consumsed per year? The answer to this last one is 2,175 pounds per year.
According to USDA statistics from 2001, annual animal protein production in the U.S. is 8 million metric tons, from the over 9 billion livestock in the country. In addition, here are the 2009 statistics for the two main plant crops grown in the U.S., corn and soybeans. Corn harvest is 2009 was 13.2 billion bushels. Soybean production was 3.36 billion bushels. It should be noted, however, that not all of this corn and soy production is used as a direct food source, with a large portion going to feed livestock raised for meat and dairy production. Also, food production and food consumption in the U.S. are not necessarily linked, as we are involved in a complex relationship of import/export of food products with other countries around the world.
