About 295,000 metric tons of nitrogen from fertilizer was dumped into the Gulf of Mexico just between April and May of 2009.  The numbers do fluctuate depending on the rainfall that occurred that year and how much runoff results.  This number was 23% below 2008’s spring runoff but 11% higher than the average runoff from 1979 to 2009.
