How much farmland do we need per person for food production?

With all the modern changes in industrial agriculture, this number continues to shrink. In earlier centuries, multiple acres of food were needed to sustain a single person, but since the Green Revolution, production has skyrocketed and it now takes a mere 1.8 acres to grow food for the average American diet. Assuming population trends hold true and technological innovations continue, some predict by 2050 it could take a homogenized 0.6 acres of food to sustain the average person.
