How much extra energy does a computer consume when it is overclocked or running a lot of programs?

It largely depends on what kind of computer you have but here’s an illustration based on information from the website linked to below. An old Apple imac G5 uses about 97 watts when just sitting there, but still on, and about 120 watts if it is busy opening a bunch of pictures. If you use your computer 1500 hours a year (about 4 hours a day), that 23 watt difference adds up to $3.40 per year difference. See the link for more potential comparisons.
