Approximate 50 percent of the original 1.5 million-acre Everglades have been turned into agricultural or urban areas. In early 2003, Congress approved a compromise that will allow a major water flow restoration project to go forward. Known as the Modified Water Deliveries Project, the initiative is essential to the $8 billion federal-state partnership to restore the Everglades.
