Initial estimates by material researchers suggest that energy consumption can be cut by up to 50 percent by using a unit with magnetic refrigerating technology instead of a conventional refrigerator. Refrigerators account for about one-fifth of total domestic energy consumption. The main research goals in the area of magnetocalorics are to save energy in numerous potential applications ranging from cryoproduction in the process industry, through automotive air conditioners, miniaturized cooling systems for electronic components and refrigerators.
