In 2006, Americans bought about 31.2 billion liters of bottled water, the bottles of which required the equivalent energy of about 17 million barrels of oil to produce.  A single one-liter bottle, cap, and label takes about 3.4 megajoules of energy to make, or about 812 nutritional calories (kilocalories).
