How much energy is used by composting?

The act of composting actually produces energy instead of using it.  When a compost pile is correctly maintained, it produces heat (sometimes up to 140 degrees Farenheit), as well as methane which can be used in a variety of scenarios.  As the attached article shows, Jean Pain was able to use a single 12-ton compost pile to provide heat and hot water for his 1000 sq. ft. home for 18 months.  There is quite a bit of potential for the use of compost piles, as I am sure more will be discovered in the near future.
