The source below basically says that microwaves do use quite a bit of energy but still not as much as a conventional oven in most cases. Even though a watt rating for a microwave describes how much energy, the machine can convert into microwaves, the actual power draw is larger. In the article, an 850-watt microwave used as much as 1.6 kilowatts on its maximum setting. An idle microwave, however, does not require much energy at all to power its digital clock.
