It takes relatively little energy considering the tire is basically spent and would have been dumped in a landfill anyway. After shredding up the tire, you simply use it wherever you would use regular mulch as an eco-friendly alternative. The same thing goes for wood. Since you are essentially reusing it in a different form, you are aiding it in the decomposition process while keeping it out of the dump.
