Desalination is the process of transforming ocean water into potable fresh water. The most efficient desalination process is reverse osmosis, which uses about about 5kWh for every cubic meter of water produced. This means it would take about 6165 kWh to produce 1 acre-foot of potable water, which is the amount of water that four people would use in a year.
