How much energy does the internet take to run?

It’s really hard to give exact or up-to-date numbers on this since there isn’t a worldwide reporting of how much energy every website uses. That said, a Brown study found that “US data centers used 61 billion kilowatt hours of energy in 2006.” That’s 1.5 percent of U.S. energy usage and enough power to run the UK for 2 months.
