How much energy does a CFL light bulb save in its lifetime?

An 18 watt CFL (equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent) is said to save 570 kWh in its lifetime. This is about the average total electricity usage (540 kWh) that 1 person uses for 1 month. Even more interesting is that if every person in the U.S. used CFLs, the country could close 90 average-sized power plants. CFLs are now made for lights with dimmers and lamps with a 3-way setting. See the 2nd link below for a CFL online calculator, where you can see how much cost savings you would gain by switching from incandescent bulbs to CFLs.
