How much energy do we use by running computers every day?

Computers are a huge part of our daily lives and a very small percentage of our society consider the amount of energy they use.  When answering this question, it is important to note that desktops and laptops use hugely different amounts of energy.  A desktop uses anywhere from 65-250 watta of electricity, where laptops use between 15 and 45.  A screensaver uses between 65 and 250 watts and a standby mode uses between 1 and 6.  With most of Americans now using computers, this really adds up and shows that the computer chosen has a true impact.
