How much energy do we spend making food to feed our cows?

It’s quite a lot. The average steer that is fed a corn-based feedlot diet will consume around 284 gallons of oil in its lifetime–in terms of how much energy it takes to feed the cow. Since 34.4 million cows are slaughtered for food in the US every year, that would mean nearly 10 billion gallons of oil go into producing the cows. Wow, right?
