How much energy could I save by painting my roof white?

By some estimates, painting a roof white can save up to 20% on cooling costs. President Obama’s U.S. Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, said that by painting a roof white you can “change the albedo of the Earth – you make it more reflective. So the sunlight comes down and it actually goes back up – there is no greenhouse effect.” He says that if every house were to have a white roof, that would be like taking all the cars off the road for 11 years- and effectively reversing global warming. The same principle can be used for car roofs and pavement, or anything with a surface. Makes me want to get some used paint from the dump and get started!
