How much energy could be extracted from landfills in the United States?

    According to,”‘Waste to Energy’ plants currently process more than 30 million tons of trash each year…power generated by these plants is approximately 2,816 megawatts per hour.”  Using CNBC’s estimation, the U.S. creates more than 250 million tons of trash annually, a rough calculation can be made. Approximately 23,467 megawatts per hour could be extracted at current annual waste levels.  This is assuming that more efficient extraction rates have not been developed since these numbers were estimated.
